Old Stupid Joke:

A guy goes to a doctor and says he sees spots.
The doctor says "ïnteresting."
The fellow continues, "I hear a ringing in my ears."
The doctor nods.
"änd I have a tingling feeling in my fingers !" says the patient.
"Have you had this before?" asks the doctor.
"Yes" says the patient.
"Well" says the doctor, "you've got it again."

Today's Golden Oldie is from 1999.

The latest news out of the formerly moderate state of Morocco now in the throes of Arab Spring:

Israeli flags burnt in Morocco rally
Organizers claim 100,000 people took part in Land Day rally in Rabat, protested participation of Israeli diplomat in EUROMED meeting. David Saranga taken out back door.

Several days prior to the Global March to Jerusalem, thousands of Moroccans took part in a mass rally in Rabat "in support of Jerusalem." Israeli diplomat David Saranga, who was in the city for a conference, was taken out of the building through a side door as demonstrators protested his presence there, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Monday. Palestinian flags were flown and Israeli flags were burned during the march.
A Moroccan Islamic organization that organized the march claimed that 100,000 participated in the rally.

Terror and Europe (1985)

Dry Bones
December 30, 1985

(1985) Dry Bones cartoon: Terrorism, terrorists, Israel, Europe, Appeasement, France, Toulouse,
Today's Golden Oldie is from 1985.

My "trick" is to use humor as a means of communication, but that was not my goal when I did this cartoon in 1985. It expressed (back then) the anger I feel now, in the wake of the attack in Toulouse.

And it's just as appropriate.

Attacks in Toulouse, France

Dry Bones cartoon: Jewish School, Toulouse, Terrorism, attack, France, neo-nazi, Nazi, Islamism, Islamists, Shuldig, 2012
According to World Jewish Daily:

Toulouse Killer Likely Filmed Attack, Executed Little Girl

"A tragic update to a tragic story.

Police now say the killer of four Jews in Toulouse likely filmed the attack with a a camera attached to his chest and methodically stalked his victims, murdering a little girl in cold blood.

According to eyewitness accounts, after the killer entered the Jewish Ozar HaTorah school, he chased after 7-year-old Miriam Monsonego and shot her repeatedly.

He grabbed Miriam as she tried to escape, grasped her hair and shot her. Then, as she bled to death on the floor, he lifted up her head and fired two additional bullets.

The brutality of the crime -- which also took the lives of Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, 30, and his two sons, Gabriel, 6, and Arieh, 3, -- has led French police to suspect a violent, racist intent behind the attacks.

In a bizarre and macbre development, French police also say the killer seems to have filmed the attacks" -more

Dry Bones cartoon: Syria, Arab Spring, U.S., Israel, Zionism, Arabs, Assad, Middle East, Media, 2012
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency:

Local, Arab and International Condemnations of Terrorist Bombings Continue

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – March 18,2012
"The International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions (ICATU) on Sunday strongly condemned the two terrorist attacks which hit Damascus yesterday morning, stressing that they are part of targeting the Syrian people and their security, stability and national unity...

. . . . In separate statements, the General Union of Arab Farmers, the Arab Youth Union and Union of the Palestinian Communities and Institutions in Diaspora/Europe condemned Damascus terrorist explosions, which they said will not weaken the Syrians steadfastness, national unity or principled national and pan-Arab stances.

The organizations considered that the two terrorist blasts comes in the framework of the organized terrorism supported by the US, Israel and the reactionary Arab countries,-more

Israeli Spring

Dry Bones cartoon: Israel, Gaza, Spring, Flowers, Missiles, Shuldig, War, Zionism, 2012
Long before the Internet age, Dry Bones was the cartoon of the Jerusalem Post. It was drawn for fellow English-speakers living here in Israel. Sometimes I would do a cartoon to sum up the feeling of our shared Israeli experience, especially at moments that I felt were significant.

I think that here in Israel, we are now at one of those moments, and I indulged myself by doing today's cartoon. It's a shared-feeling message from an old Zionist for all the folks here at home as we prepare to enter the Spring of 2012.

Flowers and Evil

Dry Bones cartoon: Spring, Flowers. Missiles, Gaza, Hamas, Terrorism,
I was watching the Israel TV reports from the south where Israeli men women and children have been living with missile attacks from Gaza.

I couldn't help but notice in the news footage the beautiful wild flowers that were blooming. I couldn't take my eyes off of them.

When I sat down to do today's cartoon, this is what came out. It's either funny or bitter, or possibly both.

Palestinian Terror (2002)

Dry Bones
March 08 2002

(2002) Dry Bones cartoon: Terrorism, Palestinians, Gaza, Israel, America, U.K., Missiles,
Today's Golden Oldie is from 10 years ago this month, in March 2002.

For some reason this cartoon reminds me of a conversation with an old friend, now sadly departed. His name was Alex Berlyne. Alex, an Israeli Jew from the U.K. explained that because I had grown up in America I thought of certain situations as being "Problems", while British English had the alternate "Trouble". Alex maintained that speaking about the "Troubles" in Ireland, was descriptive of bad stuff going on, while my American use of the word "Problem" implied the exsistence of a solution.

Today's cartoon is a "Middle East Quiz Show". Yes, Gazans are launching missiles at Israeli towns, cities, and villages. Because they can.

Meanwhile, just in from in another part of the Middle East, according to Reuters:
Iraqi Shi’ite militia stone youths to death for Western-style “emo” punk clothes

"At least 14 youths have been stoned to death in Baghdad in the past three weeks in what appears to be a campaign by Shi’ite militants against youths wearing Western-style “emo” clothes and haircuts, security and hospital sources say.

Militants in Shi’ite neighborhoods where the stonings have taken place circulated lists on Saturday naming more youths targeted to be killed if they do not change the way they dress."-more

Today's Golden Oldie is from 2000.

I posted this cartoon today because now, after years of drought, Israel is being deluged with rain. In our part of the world, winter rains are a blessing. Our resevoirs are refilling, the earth is soaking up the life-sustaining waters, and the flowers that bloom in the Spring are already bursting into bloom.

Lovely.

Shimon Peres: a dovish voice in Obama's ear

Israeli President Shimon Peres meets with President Obama today. Mr. Peres opposes an Israeli preemptive strike on Iran, adding a dovish voice to deliberations between the US and Israel.
"On the eve of a summit between President Barak Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to close gaps on confronting Iran, Mr. Obama meets today with an Israeli elder statesman who has staked out a more dovish position than the government.

Purim Time!

Dry Bones cartoon: Purim, Holidays, Jewish Culture, Halloween, News, Costumes,
Next week we will be celebrating Purim and the country seems ready for our annual "Spring Break" of fun. Folks are hoping to see Jerusalem costumed in a coating of white snow. Driving rains and melting snow in the north are pouring into our water supply, the Sea of Galilee. The front pages of our local newspapers feature colorful photos of floats being built for the coming Purim parades.

Today's cartoon explains this longing for Purim fun.

BTW, Purim day this year is March 8th, which I hasten to point out is also "International Women's Day"'and my Birthday.

Twenty years ago this month!

A rare single-panel Dry Bones cartoon. It was a pessimistic view of the future. Unfortunately, it turned out that I was right.
