Bibi Versus The Iceman

Obama and Bibi Netanyahu as battling SuperHeros : Dry Bones cartoon.
I thought that I'd draw Obama and Bibi Netanyahu as battling SuperHeroes, but they came out looking like a pair of phony costumed TV wrestlers putting on a show!
* * *
The Arab-Israeli conflict will end when the Arab states accept the existence of a Jewish State in the region as natural. Political correctness requires that we ignore this obvious truth and pretend that the problem is simply a border dispute between "Palestinians" and Israelis.

No Jews Allowed

Obama's west bank plan : Dry Bones cartoon.
Obama's plan for Peace on the West Bank is not new.

The Nazis invented two words for it.
"Judenfrei" refers to "freeing" an area of all of its Jewish citizens. "Judenrein" (literally "clean of Jews") was also used. This had the stronger connotation that the area had been cleansed of Jewish blood. -more

Thanksgiving Day (1993)

(1993) Dry Bones cartoon: Thanksgiving Day.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done 13 years ago for Thanksgiving Day in 1993.

The rituals of an American Thanksgiving are one of the few things that I miss here in Israel. So those of you out there in the States who are about to chomp into turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and sweet potatoes ...please think of me ...and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

* * *
Note that in this cartoon, Doobie the Dog has his own strip as an add-on to the Dry Bones cartoon. Back in the Old Days in America when Sunday Comic Supplements published full page comic strips like Dick Tracy and Little Orphan Annie, they often had a second, one-line comic strip (by the same cartoonist) running under the cartoon page.

...as I did in today's Golden Oldie!

Season's Greetings

thanksgiving day parade in shadow of rising unemployment figures : Dry Bones cartoon.
It used to be that the NY Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, with its fabulous, gigantic balloons floating above the crowds, ushered in the Christmas Season.

These days it seems that it is the start of an exercise in examining sales figures. checking to see how the U.S. Economy is doing.

I must say that in spite of all the talk about America having come out of its "recession", I have serious doubts.

PLO Problem (1989)

(1989) Dry Bones cartoon: Arafat and the PLO face a growing threat from the fundamentalists. Maybe if they kill Rushdie?
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done 20 years this month. Back then the handwriting was on the wall and the rise of Islamist fascism was evident to all. Now, twenty years later Arafat's heir, Mahmud Abbas, head of the PLO faces the same grim reality.

As a cartoonist I must confess that Arafat was a dream to draw!!

Fresh Water Source

Hamas and Fresh Water : Dry Bones cartoon.
The world's largest reverse osmosis desalination plant (and a target of Gazan missiles) is in the Ashkelon area. The desalination plant provides fresh water to Israel and supplies Gaza with its drinking water. The Israeli government plans to build four more plants which will make the country water independent.

The Ashkelon plant has been targeted by Gazan missiles. A Gazan missile hit would hurt Israel but would also stop all the fresh water flow to Gaza. Which, of course, gave me the idea for today's cartoon.

The story of Israel's technological advances in converting sea water to fresh drinking water probably didn't make it to your local newspaper (or the International Media for that matter) but here's a recent piece from Popular Mechanics:

"The Ashkelon Desalination Plant, which opened in 2005, converts more than 26 billion gallons of Mediterranean Sea water into fresh water for the State of Israel each year—5 to 6 percent of total demand. Ashkelon is not only the largest reverse-osmosis desalination plant in the world, it's also one of the few public plants to recover waste heat to improve efficiency and reduce costs." -more

25 Long Years

Jonathan Pollard's 25th year in prison : Dry Bones cartoon.
Jonathan Pollard is the only person in the history of the United States to receive a life sentence for spying for an American ally. On November 21, 2009, Pollard will enter the 25th year of his life sentence, with no end in sight, and with not a peep out of our "leadership".

The maximum sentence today for such an offence is 10 years. The median sentence for this offence is 2 to 4 years. Click to see a list of comparative sentences.

American Politics (1980)

(1980) Dry Bones cartoon: Jimmy Carter's empty Promises.
Today's Golden Oldie is from October 1980.

The cartoon was about Jimmy Carter who was on the campaign trail for a bid at a second term as U.S. President. He lost.

With Obama we now face an American President who treats the repression of Iranian demonstrators as an internal Iranian affair while taking a stern and personal interest in the question of where Jews may or may not be allowed to live in the city of Jerusalem!?!! This Presidency does not feel the need to hide its double-standard support of the "Palestinian" cause behind empty pro-Israel promises.

It will be interesting to see if Obama will, like Jimmy Carter, turn out to be a one-term wonder.

Future Shock

The Old Folks learned to Email, So the Youngsters Are Now Twittering : Dry Bones cartoon.
Today's Dry Bones cartoon is called Future Shock. Future Shock was a concept and a book published back in 1970 by Alvin Toffler.

The term refers to the confusion and disorientation which, he claimed, we would all suffer in the future. It would occur when technological advances would come faster than we, as individuals or as societies, could handle. Back then. Toffler was called a "futurist" (as opposed to a sociologist). His simplest definition of future shock was "too much change in too short a period of time".

So welcome to the future.
Are you paying attention?

A Bill Clinton Promise (1999)

A Bill Clinton Promise (1999) : Dry Bones cartoon.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon from December 1999. Ten years ago next month.

I've posted this Golden Oldie because the ex-President is here in Israel to share his "wisdom" with us. According to the Associated Press (as quoted by Haaretz)

Bill Clinton in Israel: There would be peace if Rabin were still alive
"Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said on Saturday that if former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin were still alive, a peace accord would have been reached between Israel and all of its neighbors." -more
The impeached President, who broke his promise to free Pollard ten years ago, is now telling us that the ongoing, continuous, and relentless genocidal quest to destroy the Jewish State is because of Israel's political leadership!!?!

The man pushes the limits of hutzpah!

* * *
Ten years after Clinton's broken promise, Jonathan Pollard remains in Prison ... On November 21, 2009, Jonathan Pollard will enter his 25th year of a life sentence for his activities on behalf of Israel. The median sentence for the offense Pollard committed - one count of passing classified information to an ally - is 2 to 4 years. Pollard received his life sentence without a trial, as a result of a plea bargain which he honored and the U.S. government violated.

Non Believers

the Islamist and the Non Believer : Dry Bones cartoon.
The focus of today's cartoon is the Western "Non Believer".

These folks are committed to not believing what is happening before their eyes. Their ability to maintain their non-belief in the Islamist war that is being waged against them is astounding!

Turkey

Shana Tova : Dry Bones cartoon.
What has happened to the Turkish-Israeli Alliance?

According to the Muslim Media Network:

"TEL AVIV — Turkey was said to have suspended up to $1 billion in proposed Israeli defense projects after canceling a major air exercise with Israel.

A leading Israeli defense analyst said the government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has decided to end defense and military cooperation with Israel. Analyst Ron Ben-Yishai said the Turkish Defense Ministry has shelved a range of proposed Israeli projects.

“New deals worth tens and hundreds of millions of dollars offered by Israel’s defense industries to the Turkish Army, as well as cooperation with Turkish colleagues, are being put on hold or cancelled altogether,” Ben-Yishai said in a report." -more

According to Barry Rubin:

The Turkey-Israel alliance is over.
"After two decades plus of close cooperation, the Turkish government is no longer interested in maintaining close cooperation with Israel nor is it—for all practical purposes—willing to do anything much to maintain its good relations with Israel.

The U.S.-Turkish alliance, which goes back about six decades, is also over but much less visibly so, though the two relationships are interlinked.

And that’s one important point in the first development. If the Turkish government was really concerned about protecting the kind of tight links with America that have existed for so long, it would be far more cautious about jettisoning the old policy toward Israel." -more

Friends (1994)

(1994) Dry Bones cartoon: Christians, Muslims, and the Golden Age of Spain.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done 15 years ago in 1994.

It's two weeks since I returned to Israel from my speaking tour in the States. These days I find that lots of Christian activists are on our side. It's really exciting to speak in an pro-Israel evangelical church!! To be among Righteous Gentiles! Real Zionists! Fantastic!

On the way back from America I had a nine-hour stopover in Amsterdam. So I took the train from Schipol airport into town. While on the platform, waiting for a train, I bumped into a couple of American Christian Missionaries who lived in England. After hearing me offer assistance in Hebrew to some Israeli tourists, they eagerly expressed their love for me, for Israel, for the Jewish People, and then they went into their missionary pitch.

I explained to them that I considered their attempts to convert Jews away from Judaism was cultural and religious genocide. They promised to pray for me and stuffed their propaganda into my hand. Since then I've been upset about their spoiling my warm and cozy feelings about Christians.

So I posted today's Golden Oldie.

Face It

Time to Face Up to the Importance of the Fort Hood Islamist Suicide Attack : Dry Bones cartoon.
It is time for America and the Obama administration to open their eyes and face up to the significance of the successful Fort Hood Islamist suicide attack. Here's an interesting analysis of the current situation by Robert Spencer:

"Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist, murdered twelve people and wounded twenty-one inside Fort Hood in Texas yesterday, while, according to eyewitnesses, “shouting something in Arabic while he was shooting.” Investigators are scratching their heads and expressing puzzlement about why he did it. According to NPR, “the motive behind the shootings was not immediately clear, officials said.” The Washington Post agreed: “The motive remains unclear, although some sources reported the suspect is opposed to U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq and upset about an imminent deployment.” The Huffington Post spun faster, asserting that “there is no concrete reporting as to whether Nidal Malik Hasan was in fact a Muslim or an Arab.”

Yet there was, and what’s more, Major Hasan’s motive was perfectly clear — but it was one that the forces of political correctness and the Islamic advocacy groups in the United States have been working for years to obscure. So it is that now that another major jihad terror attack has taken place on American soil, authorities and the mainstream media are at a loss to explain why it happened – and the abundant evidence that it was a jihad attack is ignored."-more

Start Worrying (1994)

(1994) Dry Bones cartoon: Sukkot.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done 15 years ago for in November of 1994.

The Islamist attack at Fort Hood should have been a wake-up call about the growing threat from Radical Islam in America. But apparently it hasn't. Here's a Politically Correct Time Mag report on the successful and bloody Islamist suicide attack on American soldiers, in an American army base, on American soil:

"Determining whether Hasan's actions were inspired by religious fervor (he reportedly said "Allahu akbar" before opening fire), his exposure to the mental trauma of the soldiers he counseled or other unknown factors may be impossible. Currently Hasan is in intensive care at a San Antonio hospital, breathing without a respirator. But given his mental state, even he may not know what caused him to kill.

At least for now, the Army is more worried about how the world is reacting to Hasan's actions than an explanation for them. "I'm concerned that this increased speculation could cause a backlash against some of our Muslim soldiers," General George Casey, the Army's top officer, said Sunday on CNN. "And I've asked our Army leaders to be on the lookout for that." -more

Head Check

Islamist Suicide Attack at Fort Hood : Dry Bones cartoon.
The sentiments expressed in today's Dry Bones cartoon are being expressed by bloggers all over the net. Here's a piece from NewsRealBlog that's worth reading:
"A Muslim fanatic with an Internet site praising Islamic suicide bombers as defenders of their comrades is a Major in the U.S. Army with access to military intelligence and lethal weaponry. And it’s not as though the army didn’t know that he was a Muslim fanatic and supporter of the Islamic jihad against the West. He was under investigation for six months because of his anti-American, jihadist rantings. He did not want to be deployed. He wanted to be discharged.

But despite his identification with America’s enemies, the army kept him in its officer corps. How in God’s name was this possible? But it was. And so, after calling America the “aggressor” in Afghanistan and Iraq this Muslim jihadist traitor army officer picks up his semi-automatic weapons and heads for the center at Ft. Hood where soldiers are being deployed to fight the jihadists in Afghanistan to conduct his massacre. Yet this morning the Fox News Channel chiron says “Investigators search for a motive in the Ft. Hood killings.” Is everybody out of their mind?" -more

All It Takes

Democracy in Iran, opposition demonstrations in Tehran are crushed by Ahmadinejad : Dry Bones cartoon.
"All it takes . . ." is a reference to the often quoted and more often ignored piece of folk wisdom "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".
* * *
Below is an editorial from yesterday's (Nov.5, 09) Wall Street Journal about Obama's response to the pro-Democracy protests in Iranian cities:

Obama on Tehran's Democrats:
"We do not interfere in Iran's internal affairs"

Tens of thousands of protesters yesterday braved police batons and tear gas canisters in the streets of Iranian cities to denounce their theocratic rulers and call for a change of regime. In spite of repression by the Basiji thugs and the West's short attention span, the Green Revolution lives on.

On this, the 30th anniversary of the hostage taking at the U.S. Embassy, their message was to a large degree intended for America and President Obama. The opposition hijacked the day, usually an occasion to denounce the Great Satan, to declare their desire to break with that past and build a free Iran. They marched alongside state-sanctioned rallies, before their protests were broken up violently.

For this broad coalition of democrats, America is a beacon of hope and the Iran of the street arguably the most pro-American place in the world. Earlier this year, before the huge demonstrations in the wake of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's brazen theft of the June presidential election, one popular opposition chant was, "O ba ma!"—in Farsi a play on the new American President's last name that translates as, "He with us!"

But the opposition's dreams of American support, moral as much as anything, have been dashed. Mr. Obama was slow and reluctant to speak out on their behalf and eager to engage the Iranian regime in nuclear talks as soon as the summer of protest tapered off. Iran's democrats are now letting their disappointment show. The new chant passed around in Internet chat rooms and heard in the streets yesterday was, "Obama, Obama—either you're with them or with us." -more

Flu Vaccine Fears

Flu Vaccine Fears : Dry Bones cartoon.
Sometimes I long for the "good old days", when I was a kid. (In the long-ago time). Back then we thought that Medical Doctors were scientists and mini-gods. We trusted them.

Slang for something that was good for you was "just what the doctor ordered".

These days, American TV ads for the latest drug carry a fast-talking list of the unfortunate but possible side-effects of the stuff that they want you to get from your doctor. So the ad sells us the benefits and also warns us about the side-effects.

If it's up to us to decide what we want, and we don't know enough to make a rational decision, then it's no wonder that there's fear in every option.

Including the taking or shunning of the Swine Flu vaccine.

* * *

The last story I heard on the TV news in America was that the U.S. government was going to give the vaccine to the "detainees" at Guantanamo Bay. I'm sure that if I were one of those Gitmo prisoners I'd choose shunning rather than taking.

Clinton and the Stormy Weather (1998)

(1998) Dry Bones cartoon: Bill Clinton and Rain Stormy Weather in Israel.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon done in 1998.

I returned to Israel a few days ago in time to say hi and goodbye to the LSW (long suffering wife) who took off for a two week vacation and family visit in NYC and New Jersey.

My return coincided with the Clinton visit (Hillary, not Bill) and the sudden pounding of the country with violent rain storms. I've spent the past few days with my nose pressed to the window pane, watching the storm outside, and sipping a mug of hot coffee. Here in the Holy Land, rain is a blessing ...but highways and basements are being flooded.

There's something about Israeli rain storms that makes me feel closer to the land, and I just didn't feel very political. Which is why I searched for something about sudden storms for today's Golden Oldie . I found this 1998 cartoon about being hit by a sudden blustery storm ...strangely tho', it's also about meeting with Clinton (Bill not Hillary) and about demands for Israeli concessions!

Go figure.

Meet the Machine

Dry Bones cartoon: the anti-Israel, anti-Zionist Machine.
Well gang, I'm back from my U.S. tour. I spoke for two important American organizations: the ZOA and CAMERA. I was also able to deliver my first presentation as a Yale Fellow at YIISA (the Yale Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism)YIISA is a lone, shinning light on the western Academic scene.

Today's cartoon covers some recent activities of the anti-israel machine.
